Abstract

The article focuses on analyzing the research productivity of centrally funded universities in India, distinguishing between those established before 2009 and those established in 2009 or later. Using bibliometric data from the Web of Science for 2017–2021, it found that journal articles constituted over 91% of publications, with Banaras Hindu University and Central University of Punjab leading in citations among the older and newer universities, respectively. Average citation impact was similar across both groups, despite differences in total publication volume, and co-authorship patterns indicated higher collaboration in newly established universities. Additionally, nearly half of the top-cited publications were published by Elsevier, suggesting a preference for this publisher among Indian central university researchers.
