Abstract

The article focuses on how medieval Welsh writers used Trojan origin myths to construct a new national history and identity for Wales after its conquest by England in 1284. Topics include the adaptation of classical Trojan legends through Geoffrey of Monmouth and Welsh translations, the political trauma of conquest and loss of independence, and the role of vernacular literature in sustaining Welsh cultural memory and claims to nationhood.
