Abstract

The article focuses on Arts Law’s visits to art centres across the Tiwi Islands in April and May 2024, where they engaged with local artists practicing traditional and contemporary art forms such as ochre painting, carving, weaving, and textile printing. Arts Law delivered workshops on copyright, moral rights, Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP), licensing, and wills, followed by legal advice and wills clinics at multiple centres including Jilamara Arts & Crafts, Munupi Arts & Crafts, Ngaruwanajirri Art Centre, and Bima Wear. The visits highlighted the cultural significance of art centres as both community and economic hubs within the Tiwi Islands, which have a population under 3,000 across Melville and Bathurst Islands. The article emphasizes the ongoing collaboration between Arts Law and Tiwi artists to support their legal and cultural needs.
