Abstract

The article focuses on the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the largest federal arts funding agency in the United States, which faces potential elimination under President Donald Trump's 2026 budget proposal aimed at reducing the federal deficit. Established in 1965, the NEA provides grants to nonprofit organizations, public agencies, educational institutions, and individual artists nationwide, supporting diverse projects including arts education and creative writing. Recent policy changes have shifted NEA funding priorities toward projects aligned with the Administration’s agenda, such as celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence and supporting historically Black colleges and universities, leading to grant cancellations for several arts organizations. This marks the second attempt by the Trump Administration to dismantle the NEA, alongside similar threats to the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute for Museum and Library Services.
