Abstract

This article explores medical mistrust and experiences of discrimination among members of the BDSM community in primary care settings, focusing on how these factors influence the disclosure of kink-related injuries to healthcare providers. Based on an online survey of 301 self-identified BDSM practitioners, nearly 40% reported experiencing discrimination in healthcare, and over 20% had concerns related to BDSM they wished to discuss but did not. Higher levels of medical mistrust and prior discrimination were significantly associated with hiding injuries from providers, with medical mistrust serving as a key predictor of nondisclosure. The study highlights the impact of stigma and mistrust on healthcare communication and suggests the need for culturally sensitive, nonjudgmental care to improve health outcomes for this population.
