Abstract

The article focuses on the evolving nature of leadership influence in today’s rapidly changing social and technological landscape, a phenomenon termed "The Influence Flip" by The Influence Lab. It explains how traditional top-down influence based on position and authority is being replaced by lateral, peer-to-peer influence driven by social media, artificial intelligence, and generational shifts. The Influence Lab’s research identifies four leadership influence styles—Domination, Manipulation, Persuasion, and Influence—with only the latter, characterized by mutual benefit and lasting impact, being effective in the current environment. To develop this effective influence, the article introduces "The Influence Cycle," a three-step process of Connect, Convey, and Convince®, which leaders can use to build trust, simplify communication, and foster genuine commitment, thereby improving organizational outcomes and stakeholder engagement.
