Abstract

This article focuses on recent research from Iowa State University examining the diagnostic value of eyewitness lineup procedures in criminal investigations. While suspect identifications have been extensively studied and improved over the past 45 years, lineup rejections—when witnesses do not identify any suspect—have received less attention and are considered less diagnostic. The research, grounded in Signal Detection Theory, suggests that lineup rejections are less accurate because it is more difficult to reject multiple faces than to identify a single one, but accuracy improves when witnesses rate each non-identified lineup member individually. The study highlights the potential for eyewitness memory to help rule out innocent suspects and calls for further research on the role of suspect rejections in cases involving multiple witnesses.
