Abstract
The article focuses on André Breton's influential visit to Haiti in 1945 and its connection to the 1946 popular uprising against the dictatorship of Élie Lescot, known as "les cinq glorieuses" (the five glorious days). Breton's engagement with Haitian artists and poets, particularly through the surrealist movement, inspired a radical response among the youth, leading to a mass uprising that briefly overthrew the regime. The article explores the interplay between surrealism and the political landscape of Haiti, highlighting the contributions of figures like Jacques-Stephen Alexis and the role of the journal La Ruche in mobilizing revolutionary sentiments. Despite the initial success of the uprising, the subsequent military coup and the rise of François Duvalier's dictatorship dashed hopes for lasting change, raising questions about the efficacy of art and literature in the face of state repression.
