Abstract
This article examines the work of Polish rapper Taco Hemingway through the lens of migration studies, focusing on how his status as a return migrant shapes his music and its social impact. It situates Hemingway's oeuvre within the concept of social remittances—norms, ideas, and cultural influences that migrants transfer back to their home country—and explores themes of migration stages, return migration, and the failure of the "Grand Narrative" of Polish migration, which idealizes success abroad. Hemingway's lyrics reflect the ambivalence and disillusionment of post-2004 Polish migrants who experience economic and social exclusion abroad and dissatisfaction upon return, often leading to circular migration. The article also discusses Hemingway's role in Polish hip hop's evolution, his critique of Polish society and politics, and the measurable influence of his music on Polish youth culture, highlighting the complex interplay between migration, identity, and cultural expression in contemporary Poland.
