Abstract

This article focuses on the life and scientific contributions of Dr. Benjamin Franklin Hammond, a pioneering African American oral microbiologist and educator. Hammond served as Professor Emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and was the first African American to chair a microbiology department at a major U.S. university outside of Historically Black Colleges or Universities. His research advanced understanding of oral microbial species involved in dental diseases, including characterization of pathogens such as Lactobacillus casei and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, and he established the first U.S. clinical laboratory for antibiotic sensitivity testing of periodontal pathogens, now known as the Oral Microbiology Testing Service (OMTS). Beyond his scientific career, Hammond was also a cultured individual with deep interests in the arts and humanities, supporting regional cultural institutions and maintaining a lifelong appreciation for music and art.
