Building bridges with the Pennsylvania State Police: A pilot assessment of a Law Enforcement Community Outreach Program.

Abstract

The article focuses on the Pennsylvania State Police's Building Bridges Community Outreach Program (BBCOP), a non-enforcement initiative launched in 2021 to improve public education and community relations. The study evaluates participant perceptions before and after involvement in the program using pre- and post-intervention survey data from 106 student participants collected between January 2023 and January 2024. Results indicate that participants expressed overwhelmingly positive experiences and showed significant improvements in views of law enforcement effectiveness, procedural justice, and legitimacy. The study addresses a gap in empirical assessments of BBCOP's impact on public perceptions of police.
