Abstract

This article focuses on the prevalence of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), particularly verbal harassment, experienced by women in Za'atari Camp, Jordan, one of the largest Syrian refugee camps. Drawing on a 2022 survey of 409 women residents, the study highlights widespread harassment by strangers in public spaces, significant underreporting due to fear of family repercussions, stigma, and distrust in complaint mechanisms. Despite feeling relatively safe within the camp’s improved security environment, many women lack comprehensive knowledge of reporting procedures, and existing humanitarian responses face challenges in confidentiality and survivor support. The article underscores the need for gender-sensitive, survivor-centred policies, enhanced community awareness, confidential reporting channels, and ongoing evaluation to effectively address harassment and empower women in refugee camp settings.
