Abstract

This study investigated co-rumination—defined as the extensive discussion of negative emotions and thoughts—among married men and women in urban Pakistan and its effects on marital satisfaction and depressive symptoms. Data from 156 participants (78 men and 78 women) revealed that higher levels of co-rumination with one's spouse were associated with greater marital satisfaction for both sexes. Additionally, increased co-rumination correlated with lower depression levels, but this negative association was significant only for married women. The findings highlight the role of open emotional sharing in enhancing marital quality and mental health within the context of Pakistani urban families, challenging traditional gender communication norms and suggesting implications for family counseling and mental health interventions in similar cultural settings.
