Abstract

The article focuses on recent developments in submarine and intercity fiber optic cable infrastructure across several regions. Telstra InfraCo is set to activate the first leg of its $1.6 billion Intercity Fiber Network in Australia, connecting Sydney to Canberra with high-capacity fiber designed to support growing data demands, including AI technologies. The East Micronesia Cable System (EMCS), funded by Australia, Japan, and the United States, has reached its second landing station in Kosrae, Federated States of Micronesia, aiming to enhance connectivity among Pacific island nations. Libya launched the Medusa submarine cable, an 8,700-kilometer link to Europe led by the Libyan Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology Company (LPTIC), intended to improve internet quality, support 5G, and advance digital sovereignty. Additionally, Antigua and Barbuda is participating in the Caribbean Elite Alliance (CELIA) submarine cable system, a regional project to enhance digital connectivity in the Caribbean, expected to be operational by 2027.
