Abstract
A study conducted with over 8,000 job seekers found that women are often discouraged from applying to organizations with flat hierarchies due to concerns about facing frustrating challenges. This is especially important for startups, as they risk accumulating "diversity debt" if they lack gender diversity. Surprisingly, when companies mention flat hierarchies in recruitment materials, it deters women from applying or showing interest in the role. Women perceive flatter hierarchies as more challenging to fit into, anticipate a higher workload, and expect fewer opportunities for career advancement. To attract diverse applicants, companies should examine what employees value and address potential negative associations in their recruitment efforts. [Extracted from the article]
