Abstract
This article addresses the challenge leaders across sectors face in managing increasingly angry stakeholders amid a "perfect storm" of societal despair, perceived unfairness, and divisive ideologies. It presents a five-step framework—turning down the temperature, analyzing the outrage, shaping and bounding responses, understanding power to mobilize others, and renewing resilience—developed through interdisciplinary insights and case studies from organizations such as IKEA, the London Metropolitan Police, Nestlé, and Oxford University Hospitals. The framework emphasizes acknowledging emotional and cognitive drivers of outrage, carefully assessing causes and catalysts, balancing response scope, strategically leveraging different forms of power, and fostering both organizational and personal resilience. This approach aims to help managers navigate polarized environments thoughtfully while maintaining trust and long-term effectiveness.
