Abstract
The article focuses on the challenges faced by prison libraries in providing adequate materials and services to incarcerated individuals and highlights new federal legislation aimed at improving these conditions. The proposed Prison Libraries Act would allocate $10 million annually through 2031 to support reintegration, reduce recidivism, and expand educational opportunities by funding prison library resources. Various public libraries and programs across the U.S. are developing innovative approaches to digital literacy, book access, and reentry services despite limited budgets and security restrictions. Advocates emphasize that enhancing prison library services benefits both incarcerated people and society by supporting education and successful transitions back into the community.
