Abstract

After 54 years of rule by the Assad Family in Syria, the regime fell, leading to jubilant celebrations and the promise of a moderate and inclusive government under insurgent leader Ahmad al-Sharaa. The end of the civil war on Dec. 8 saw Syrians waving the three-star flags of the Syrian Revolution and searching for loved ones in prisons and mass graves. Palestinian photojournalist Belal Khaled captured the moment of freedom in Damascus, symbolized by a man climbing a ladder towards the future at the Umayyad Mosque. [Extracted from the article]
