Abstract

This article focuses on the role of adult social workers in the United Kingdom, highlighting their responsibilities in supporting individuals to enhance independence across various care settings. It addresses the prevalence of client aggression—verbal abuse, threats, and physical violence—and its emotional and physical impact on social workers, noting contributing factors such as clients' mental health and trauma history. The article discusses organisational and personal coping mechanisms, including policies, de-escalation techniques, and self-care, emphasizing the importance of building trust despite negative stereotypes and media portrayals. A case study illustrates the challenges social workers face in managing aggression and safeguarding clients, underscoring the need for proactive intervention and support within the profession.
