Abstract

The article focuses on building high-performing teams by fostering a culture that encourages smart risk-taking, defined as the "last 8%"—the gap between the risk people feel they should take and the risk they actually take. Research from the Institute for Health and Human Potential identifies two essential pillars for enabling this culture: high connection (psychological safety and feeling valued) and high courage (willingness and capability to do hard things). Teams lacking these pillars tend to fall into one of three less effective cultures—family (high connection, low courage), transactional (low connection, high courage), or fear-based (low connection, low courage)—each of which impedes risk-taking and performance. The article emphasizes that leaders must actively assess and shape their team’s culture by promoting honest conversations, accountability, and care to create an environment where employees feel safe and motivated to take interpersonal and strategic risks that drive innovation and results.
