Abstract
The article examines the failed attempts of Plato to reform the tyrant Dionysius the Younger during his visits to Syracuse in the 4th century BC. Despite Plato's efforts to provide a philosophical education and advocate for the resettlement of Greek cities, his relationship with Dionysius deteriorated, leading to animosity and ultimately danger for Plato. The account of their final meeting, as detailed in Plato's Third Letter, highlights the tension between the two, with Dionysius mocking Plato's teachings and later using him as a scapegoat for his regime's failures. The article suggests that while Plato's intentions were noble, the outcome was disastrous for both the philosopher and Syracuse. [Extracted from the article]
