Abstract

This article focuses on the historical development and application of intrauterine insemination (IUI) in assisted human reproduction. It traces IUI’s origins from early unverified accounts in animals and humans through key scientific milestones, including 18th-century canine insemination, 19th-century human procedures, and advances in sperm preservation and fertilization techniques in the 20th century. The article also notes ethical controversies, such as procedures performed on enslaved women without consent, and highlights the influence of religious opposition and agricultural practices on IUI research. Ultimately, IUI is presented as a widely used reproductive assistance method with a complex history spanning multiple species and scientific disciplines.
