Abstract

The article reviews *Broken English*, a 2025 UK/USA documentary by directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard that explores the life and legacy of singer-songwriter Marianne Faithfull through a fictional institution called the Ministry of Not Forgetting. The film uses a blend of staged interviews, archival footage, and a roundtable discussion to reconsider Faithfull’s cultural impact without consolidating or sanitizing her complex history, including her struggles with addiction and industry sexism. While the documentary’s inventive framing and Faithfull’s candid presence are highlighted, some elements, such as the roundtable segment, are critiqued as less effective. The film emphasizes the creative act of "not forgetting" Faithfull’s role among influential 1960s artists and features poignant performances, including Faithfull’s final recorded song with Nick Cave.
