Abstract

The article focuses on how hair discrimination, particularly against Black women with Afro-textured hair, persists in U.S. workplaces despite some legislative progress such as the CROWN Act, which protects against race-based hair bias and discrimination related to natural hairstyles. Research shows Black women face disproportionate professional penalties, including being perceived as unprofessional, pressured to alter their hair for job success, and even denied employment due to their hair. The article highlights "texturism," discrimination based on hair texture, and recommends that business leaders increase awareness, center Black women's experiences through employee feedback, and implement objective workplace policies to mitigate hair bias. It emphasizes ongoing education and inclusive dialogue as essential strategies to address this form of workplace discrimination.
