Abstract
This article examines the roles and challenges of sociology in times of war, focusing primarily on wartime Ukraine since 2022, with comparative insights from Palestine and the Philippines. It highlights how Ukrainian sociologists have documented rapid social transformations, civic resilience, democratic values, and war crimes despite severe disruptions, while grappling with ethical and epistemological tensions between scientific rigor and civic commitment. The article also discusses participatory and trauma-informed research approaches in conflict zones, emphasizing sociology’s contributions to bearing witness, countering misinformation, and sustaining democratic horizons. It calls for international dialogue and mutual learning to address the public, ethical, and democratic responsibilities of sociology in wartime contexts.
