Abstract

This article critically examines a January 2024 commentary titled "The Danger of Ideology: Social Work, Israel, and Anti-Semitism," which claims that the social work profession is complicit in nurturing anti-Semitism following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. The response evaluates the commentary's three main arguments regarding social work organizations' delayed responses, failure to condemn Hamas, and alleged indoctrination of social work students with anti-Semitic ideology. While acknowledging shortcomings in social work statements and actions, the article finds no evidence supporting claims of anti-Semitism or indoctrination within social work education, and highlights the importance of intellectual humility and nuanced critique aligned with social work values. It concludes that the original commentary lacks scholarly rigor, includes unverified claims, and risks promoting misinformation and polarization rather than constructive dialogue.
