Abstract

The article outlines how more than one million children are affected by parental divorce or separation each year in the United States and how their distress can stem from feeling excluded from decisions impacting their futures. It highlights various avenues through which children can express their views, such as direct testimony in court, child custody evaluations, or appointments of child advocates, while noting that direct participation in mediation remains uncommon.
