Abstract
"Frontiers of Belonging: The Education of Unaccompanied Refugee Youth" by Annika Lems explores the experiences of unaccompanied refugee youth in Switzerland. Lems conducted ethnographic fieldwork and found that despite efforts to foster inclusion through apprenticeship and vocational educational pathways, many young refugees felt excluded and stagnant. The book highlights the interior frontiers that shape educational spaces and the ways in which young refugees are made to feel "out of place" and relegated to the lowest educational track. Lems also examines the everyday interactions between young refugees and teachers, revealing the subtle ways in which exclusion and differentiation occur. The book emphasizes the importance of listening to refugees' voices and stories, as well as recognizing the structural violence and cultural differences that contribute to their experiences. It will be of interest to academics, students, practitioners, and stakeholders in the fields of anthropology, sociology, migration studies, education, and childhood studies.
