Abstract

This article develops the concept of recognition as a foundational methodological concept in qualitative social research, emphasizing its intersubjective and relational dimensions beyond traditional reflexivity. Drawing on critical theory and empirical examples, it argues that recognition involves a dynamic, dialogic process of mutual understanding that shapes meaning-making, validity, and researcher-participant relationships. Recognition is presented as both a challenge and an opportunity in research, requiring openness, humility, and ongoing dialogue to navigate power imbalances and avoid misrecognition, which can distort knowledge claims and cause harm. The authors highlight recognition's potential to bridge interpersonal interactions with broader structural and systemic forces, thereby enriching methodological approaches and supporting social change.
