Abstract
The author reflects on his childhood experience of racial prejudice and unexpected kindness during his family's move from Texas to Kentucky in the 1950s. Topics include the dangers and discrimination faced by Black families during migration, the courage and compassion shown by allies like a white family friend and a Catholic priest, and the transformative power of small gestures—like a smile—that bridged racial divides and offered hope amid fear.
