Abstract

Bias continues to be a significant issue in the scientific workplace, particularly for women and members of minoritized groups. Bias can manifest as prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination based on various social categories. Detecting and interrupting bias can be challenging due to unconscious stereotypes, subtle and ambiguous manifestations, and the accumulation of small inequities over time. Strategies for interrupting bias include tracking data to identify patterns of inequity, using objective evaluation criteria, confronting bias through respectful conversations, fostering a sense of belonging, addressing harassment, changing the reward system to recognize diverse contributions, increasing access to resources, and developing equity-minded leaders and mentors. These strategies aim to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in science. [Extracted from the article]
