Abstract
This article critically examines the experiences of a youth-serving out-of-school time (OST) nonprofit, referred to as PAMO, in a Northeast U.S. city, focusing on how it navigates its mission amid structural barriers tied to funding and capital. Using Pierre Bourdieu’s social reproduction theory and Tara Yosso’s community cultural wealth (CCW) framework, the study reveals that while PAMO centers CCW—valuing the cultural assets and aspirations of marginalized youth—it struggles to reconcile these aims with the demands of private philanthropic funders who prioritize traditional, business-oriented notions of capital. This reliance on private funding imposes linguistic and operational constraints that often conflict with the organization’s community-centered goals, creating intra-organizational tensions and limiting its autonomy. The study highlights broader systemic challenges faced by OST nonprofits, especially those led by people of color, in balancing their educational missions with the expectations of predominantly White, corporate donors.
