Abstract
The article focuses on Olga Sendra's book *Barcelona, City of Margins*, which examines Barcelona during the mid-Francoist period (1950s–60s) through the works of photographer Joan Colom, photographer Colita, and writer-activist Francisco Candel. Sendra argues that the city's margins functioned as spaces of dissent and dialogue rather than mere marginalization, highlighting how these authors revealed social bodies occupying public spaces in opposition to Francoist segregation. The book combines cultural theory and urban studies to analyze how photography and literature captured the heterogeneity and multi-sensoriality of Barcelona's social and aesthetic expressions under dictatorship. It also connects historical urban struggles to contemporary issues of public space and tourism in Barcelona, emphasizing the ongoing tension between presence and absence in the city's social fabric.
