Abstract

This article examines the impact of military–civilian partnerships (MCPs) and Uniformed Services University (USU) appointments on the academic productivity of active duty military surgeons, measured by the Hirsch index (H-index). The study found that military surgeons with civilian affiliations (CAs) have significantly higher median H-indices and publication counts compared to those without such affiliations, with this effect most pronounced in Air Force and Army surgeons but not statistically significant in Navy surgeons. Similarly, surgeons with USU appointments demonstrated greater academic output across branches. These findings suggest that MCPs and USU appointments are associated with enhanced scholarly productivity among military surgeons, supporting continued investment in such partnerships to benefit both clinical readiness and academic advancement.
