Abstract
This retrospective study evaluates the use of Nexobrid (NXB), an enzymatic debriding agent derived from bromelain, for burn wound management at a major Italian burn center between 2019 and 2023. Among 30 patients treated, 10% avoided further surgical intervention, while over 80% required additional surgery, indicating that NXB's effectiveness varies and it should be considered a complementary tool rather than a standalone treatment. The study also found that early enzymatic debridement with NXB prevented burn-induced compartment syndrome, replacing the need for escharotomy in all cases. Limitations include the study's retrospective design, small sample size, lack of a control group, and absence of long-term follow-up, prompting the authors to recommend future randomized controlled trials comparing NXB with traditional debridement methods in larger, more diverse populations.
