Major League Baseball in the digital age: The death of baseball nostalgia.

Abstract
This article examines how Major League Baseball (MLB) is shifting away from its longstanding nostalgic image rooted in an idealized, pastoral American past to better engage younger audiences in the digital age dominated by social media. Using a media ecological approach, it argues that MLB is adapting to the fast-paced, attention-driven environment of platforms like TikTok by modifying game rules, encouraging expressive player behaviors, and embracing short-form content, even as this challenges traditional baseball norms and its mythologized history. The article also discusses the evolving role of analytics in redefining player greatness, the complexities of representing the Negro Leagues' history authentically amid cultural sensitivities, and the broader cultural pressures on MLB to reconcile its past with the demands of a digitally connected, diverse, and younger fan base.
