Abstract
The article focuses on the impact of misinformation and xenophobia on Springfield, Ohio’s Haitian immigrant community following false accusations by Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance that Haitians were eating cats and dogs. Despite the city’s annual MustardFest featuring a hot dog eating contest, local leaders and event organizers largely avoided addressing the harmful rumors, which have fueled fear, violence, and social exclusion among Haitian residents. Haitian immigrants, who contribute economically to Springfield, face stigmatization and threats, prompting community efforts like a Haitian-run radio station to foster understanding and connection. While some local support has emerged, the article highlights ongoing challenges in combating racism and misinformation in the city.
