Abstract
The article explores the author's experience learning Brazilian jiu-jitsu at the Grove City Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy, focusing on how the martial art intersects with personal trauma and healing. Through lessons with Ben, a coach and friend, and observations of practitioners like Wendy, a female black belt, the author reflects on themes of control, safety, and dissociation, particularly in relation to past abusive relationships involving choking and shutdown responses. The narrative also includes insights from Jennifer, a fellow practitioner who found jiu-jitsu helpful in managing trauma triggers. The piece highlights jiu-jitsu's potential as a controlled environment for confronting physical and emotional boundaries while acknowledging the complexities of trauma and consent.
