Abstract

The article focuses on Major League Baseball’s (MLB) challenges in adapting its traditional cable-based broadcast model amid widespread cord-cutting and declining viewership. Historically reliant on cable subscribers for substantial media rights revenue, MLB now faces reduced reach and financial uncertainty, exemplified by the bankruptcy of Diamond Sports Group, a major regional sports network. Some teams, like the San Diego Padres, have begun experimenting with direct-to-consumer streaming and expanded broadcast options to regain audience access. The article highlights that while shifting to free or lower-cost broadcasts may reduce short-term revenue, it could help MLB rebuild its fan base and attract new sponsors in the evolving media landscape.
