Abstract

The article focuses on Herb Washington's unique baseball career as a pinch-runner for the Oakland Athletics, where he played over 100 games without ever batting or playing defensively. Washington, a former world-class sprinter, was recruited by A's owner Charlie Finley in 1974 to leverage his speed on the base paths. Despite initial skepticism from teammates and a challenging start, Washington gained acceptance and contributed significantly, stealing 29 bases and scoring 29 runs during his time with the team. After his brief baseball career, he transitioned successfully into business, becoming a prominent McDonald's franchise owner. Extracted from the article
