Abstract

The article focuses on the diplomatic efforts to formally end the Yom Kippur War and advance peace between Egypt and Israel, culminating in the 1978 Camp David Accords. Following the 1973 ceasefire called for by United Nations Security Council Resolution 338, initial negotiations involved multiple Arab states but primarily centered on Egypt and Israel, who signed military disengagement agreements in 1974 and the Sinai Interim Agreement in 1975. Under US President Jimmy Carter’s mediation, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin engaged in secret talks at Camp David, resulting in two frameworks: one addressing Palestinian rights (rejected by the UN) and another leading to the 1979 Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty. This treaty normalized relations between the two countries, though it fractured the broader Arab coalition and led to Sadat’s assassination in 1981.
