Abstract
This article focuses on a pilot study evaluating live sports commentary of concussion incidents in the Australian National Rugby League (NRL) during the 2024 season, specifically in relation to the Head Injury Assessment (HIA) protocol. Using a concussion commentary checklist based on responsible reporting guidelines, the study assessed 15 randomly selected concussion events and found that commentary frequently failed to meet gold-standard criteria, often using incorrect injury terminology and minimizing the severity of concussions. The findings suggest that current live commentary may contribute to misinformation about concussion, highlighting the need for improved guidance to enhance concussion awareness among sports audiences.
