Abstract
This article focuses on a study comparing mental health variables and quality of life between male and female Paralympic Powerlifting (PP) athletes during a national competition. Conducted by researchers at the Federal University of Sergipe in Brazil, the study assessed pre-competitive anxiety, trait-state anxiety, mood states, depression, and quality of life using standardized questionnaires. Results indicated that male athletes reported higher self-confidence and lower mood disturbances than female athletes, while no significant gender differences were found in anxiety, depression, or quality of life measures. The study suggests that gender-specific psychosocial stressors and familiarity with competitive stimuli may influence mental health differences, and that the Paralympic sport context might explain the overall similarity in quality of life across genders.
