Abstract

This editorial examines the sustainability challenges of tourist cities in Spain, focusing on the tension between mass tourism's economic benefits and its social and environmental costs. Drawing on philosopher Marina Garcés's concept of liveability, it critiques the capitalist growth model and explores degrowth as an alternative framework that prioritizes social equity, environmental responsibility, and collective well-being over continual economic expansion. The discussion highlights local concerns about overtourism, housing pressures, and resource distribution, while referencing the Barcelona School of Ecological Economics' advocacy for self-limitation and commoning as pathways to more just and sustainable tourism. Ultimately, the editorial calls for reimagining tourism practices to balance the needs of residents and visitors, fostering liveable tourist cities in twenty-first-century Spain.
