Abstract

The article examines the complex history and significance of Mt. Rushmore, highlighting its origins and the stakeholders involved in its creation. The initial idea for the monument came from South Dakota historian Doane Robinson, aimed at boosting the local economy, but the project evolved under sculptor Gutzon Borglum, who had a controlling vision and was linked to the KKK. The article notes that the Lakota people were excluded from the discussions during the monument's creation, although contemporary conversations with affiliated tribes are now taking place. It also discusses how modern standards for engineering and environmental considerations would prevent a project like Rushmore from being built today. [Extracted from the article]
