Abstract
This article analyzes factors influencing quarterback (QB) development in the National Football League (NFL) using data from 1994 to 2017. It finds that a young QB’s career outcomes tend to worsen when playing alongside a Pro Bowl-caliber QB, improve when drafted by a team with a losing record, and are negatively affected by extensive playing time as a rookie. These effects are most pronounced in the later stages of a QB’s career. The study employs multiple performance metrics, including games started, passing yards, and approximate value (AV)—a comprehensive measure of player performance—to support these conclusions. The findings highlight how external factors such as team quality and incumbent QB competition significantly shape a quarterback’s career trajectory.
