Abstract

This exciting new building phase is treated in Chapter 4, "Monumental Aspirations: Poggio Civitate's Archaic Phase" (97-145). At Poggio Civitate, "Archaic" is ca. 600 to ca. 525 B.C.E. This final phase of construction seems to crystalize elements from the Intermediate Phase into a monumental, unified complex. Moreover, Poggio Civitate has been an unusual and complex site from the very start of excavations in 1966. There is good evidence for communal banqueting at Poggio Civitate and such large gatherings could have taken place in the northern wing of the structure. [Extracted from the article]
