Abstract

This article focuses on the Detroit Lions’ move to the Pontiac Silverdome in 1975 and its impact on the team’s performance. The Silverdome, an 80,000-seat indoor stadium, offered improved sight lines and protection from weather but suffered from severe traffic issues and did not enhance the Lions’ home winning percentage compared to their previous outdoor stadium, Tiger Stadium. Analysis shows that the Lions’ road winning percentage declined significantly after moving indoors, a trend also observed in the Minnesota Vikings, likely due to reduced outdoor game experience affecting performance in outdoor away games. The article suggests that while domed stadiums provide comfort, they may disadvantage teams in outdoor conditions, influencing strategic considerations for teams aiming for postseason success.
