Abstract

This article examines whether elite closed-skill team-sport athletes, specifically national champion rowers, demonstrate superior executive functions (EFs) such as working memory (WM) and action inhibition, and whether their brain activation patterns differ from non-athlete controls. Fourteen elite rowers and fourteen matched controls completed WM and stop-signal tasks during functional MRI scanning. While no significant performance differences were found, imaging results indicated that the athletes showed stronger activation in brain regions associated with stable task demands and weaker activation in areas linked to rapidly changing external stimuli. These findings suggest that elite closed-skill athletes may utilize distinct cognitive strategies during EF tasks.
