Abstract
This article examines the prevalence of concussion-related anxiety among youth athletes and identifies factors associated with increased anxiety. A survey of 411 youth athletes aged around 11 years, participating in football, soccer, ice hockey, and lacrosse, assessed their concussion anxiety using a modified Illness Perception Questionnaire. Results showed that nearly half of the participants reported feeling upset or afraid at the thought of sustaining a concussion, with girls, soccer players, and those with parents exhibiting higher concussion anxiety reporting greater anxiety themselves. The study highlights the commonality of concussion-related anxiety in youth sports and suggests further research to explore its impact on behavior, reporting, and recovery.
